Stewart County Tourism

Stewart County is Southern, like sweet tea, catfish, hushpuppies, balmy summers, generations of families who love the farm like they love each other, gracious hospitality, a church on every corner, smoky barbeque and a healthy reverence for your elders and your history.

Stewart County’s claim to fame is in Dover, TN

Fort Donelson National Battlefield

It was the campaign battle that changed the course of the American Civil War…it was the campaign and battle that made Ulysses S. Grant a household name…it was the battle that made Nathan Bedford Forrest a legend…it was the campaign and battle that led to the Union capture of Nashville, the first Confederate capital to fall into Union hands…it was a campaign and battle that claimed over 500 Union dead, and over 300 Confederate dead…

It is a National Park that preserves and shares this story…a National Park that preserves many miles of Confederate earthwork fortifications…a National Park that preserves a remarkable view of the Cumberland River…a National Park that serves as the final resting place for men and women of our Armed Forces…

And it’s YOUR National Park. We are proud to take care of it for you.

The refuge was established in 1962 as a result of mitigation proceedings with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers when portion of the Kentucky Woodlands NWR was inundated with the creation of the Lake Barkely Project. Its primary purpose is to provide feeding and resting habitat for migratory birds with an emphasis placed on providing habitat for wintering waterfowl.
